SABAH was formed as a Buffalo-based not-for-profit educational corporation in 1977. As we approach our 33rd anniversary, SABAH continues to serve the developmental and recreational needs of children, youth and adults with all types of disabilities. Over the years, the generosity of private supporters has allowed SABAH to provide instruction for hundreds of Western New Yorkers with physical, cognitive or emotional challenges.
SABAH currently runs two programs for skaters of all ages; both begin in October and run through the spring. These weekly ice-skating sessions rely on adaptive skating equipment and volunteer support to foster a learning environment for our athletes. They improve their balance, coordination, endurance and strength while learning self-discipline both on and off the ice.
SABAH's School-Day program and the Evening & Weekend program are run out of five rinks in Erie and Niagara counties. At these sites, we serve skaters and volunteers from Western New York counties and Canada.
In the spring, all skaters and volunteers join together to celebrate their accomplishments by performing at the HSBC Arena for friends, family and the community to enjoy. SABAH organizes, choreographs and costumes the Annual Ice-Skating spectacular- featuring the accomplishments of SABAH Stars- for a total of over 1,000 performers. The skills learned in skating lessons translate into real-world success that our athletes carry beyond the rink and into everyday life.
Each summer SABAH runs a Summer Skating Program for athletes to work on skills throughout the SABAH off season. Summer skate usually runs 6 weeks in July and August. Information about the 2010 Summer Skate will be sent out in the spring.
